This was an excellent performance by Les Passions de l’Ame and Solomon’s Knot, both individually and together. I hope this partnership will continue Andrew Benson-Wilson full review here
This project was conceived as Solomon's Knot's first collaboration with the renowned Swiss baroque orchestra, Les Passions de l’Ame (leader: Meret Lüthi). Georg Philipp Telemann's cantata cycle, Die Tageszeiten ('The Times of the Day') was written in 1757 in Hamburg, and is one of Telemann’s finest late works. One symphony and four sacred cantatas, one for each voice-type and solo obbligato instrument, vividly describe the course of the day from the awakening of nature through to sunset. From a stylistic point of view, Telemann begins to leave the Baroque behind him, and one senses a new spirit in this astonishing product of ‘old age’. The treatment of melody in particular already points towards the oratorios of Joseph Haydn. Although the cantatas are religious works, they are rather in pantheistic vein. The poetry, by Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae, was inspired by James Thomson (1700-48), as was the text of Haydn's The Seasons.
To complete the programme, each ensemble performed a masterpiece by Bach: his orchestral suite no.3, and the 8-voice motet 'Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied', sung from memory by Solomon's Knot.
